Badmotorfinger: Heroes

The back cover of the six song EP, Heroes, from Italy's Badmotorfinger finds the five members of the band standing with their backs to the camera, left hand on hip, right hand presumably cradling their manhood in anticipation of relief (of the bladder, you dirty lot!). Yet with no hot stream appearing, not only do the band look a little impotent, they also look like a heavy metal Village People camply waiting for the dancing to begin…

It's also a good metaphor for a collection of four full electric songs and two acoustic led numbers that never really get going. Lifeless riffs, an uninspired Hetfield like bark and too much of a liking for mid-paced safety causing "Hidden Heroes" and "Needle In My Vein" to merely shuffle along without any real intent. A thin production shackles the promising heavied up Thin Lizzy like riff of "No Second Chance", the gang chant backing vocals reminding of Black Star Riders – although the nice little guitar flurries up and down the frets do grab the attention. With "Badmotorfinger" itself mining a similar source, there are signs of what BMF would really like to achieve, without ever really suggesting they know how to get there.

The two acoustic tracks, "Afterlife" and "Rebel", offer little in the way of extra excitement, although the vocal arrangements are interesting and singer Luigi 'Sange' Sangermano actually sounds much more comfortable in this setting. However, as before, what's really lacking is a truly memorable hook, melody or riff. Leaving only one burning question… are Badmotorfinger still standing expectantly, with their members in hand??? I hope it doesn't get cold…
