Bloody Hammers: The Horrific Case of Bloody Hammers

For many fans, 1970s horror films belong to a golden age. With movies like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, Carrie, The Exorcist,The Omen, Jaws, and The Wicker Man to choose from, it's hard to disagree. Alongside these recognized classics, we also find dozens of weird and wonderful b-list horrors like Werewolves on Wheels, Blood for Dracula, or Cry of the Banshee. Even though these films may differ in quality from the more popular classics, their blend of camp, horror, and sleaze can be hard for some to resist. You can find lists of the best—and the most infamous—online. The album art on this release captures this kind of love for b-list films perfectly.

The last time I reviewed something by Bloody Hammers, I expressed surprise that their music was once described as "charming." Nevertheless, this band has a way of crossing heavy Gothic music with a style that approaches the accessible and the charming to some extent. The music is both a rugged and powerful bombast and a mellow escape into horror dreamland. For those unfamiliar with the band, Bloody Hammers is made up of two members: Anders Manga (vocals and guitars) and his wife Devallia (synthesizers). Together, they create music that blends smart riffing with wicked, yet seductive, synthesizers. Check out "The Bloodsucker Leads the Dance" and "The Beyond."
