Phantom 5: Play II Win

The self-titled debut album by Phantom 5 obviously did well enough for Frontiers to opt to allow the band to go into the studio to make a second and Play II Win is the result of their endeavours. Phantom 5 is/are the brainchild of producer/guitarist (and for this record, bassist) Michael Voss and vocalist Claus Lessmann have they returned with more muscular German melodic hard rock, the likes of which is undeservedly out of vogue, certainly here in the UK. Once again joined by Robert Boebel on guitars and keyboards and Axel Kruse on drums, Play II Win is more than serviceable if not life altering.

You would have to be a hard-hearted rock fan not to get excited by the thumping drum introduction to "Baptised" or some of the better tracks such as "Do You Believe In Love" and and "Shadows Dance". The rhythm section doesn't seem to have been diminished by the departure of ex-Scorpions Francis Buchholz on bass. Solid meat and potatoes metal is the best way of describing the album as a whole which never scales great highs yet is equally never poor.
