Hinds, Allen: Fly South

Guitarist Allen Hinds has slowly been making a name for himself on the jazz/rock circuit, and also happens to be one of the leading instructors at the Musician's Institute. In addition to his new instrumental trio Wonderland Park, the guitarist just finished work on his latest solo CD, titled Fly South. Along with his trusty Gibson Les Paul, Fender Stratocaster & Telecaster, Hinds has also brought some friends to the party, which include bassists Jimmy Johnson, Abe Laboriel, and Jimmy Earl, keyboard player Matt Rohde, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, and a few guest vocalists on a couple of tracks.

With a star studded cast like that, coupled with Hinds' considerable skills on the guitar, you know you are in store for a red hot collection of tunes, which Fly South does not disappoint. "Buckley" just smokes with ample grooves and plenty of scorching jazz-rock solos from Hinds, while there is a bluesy flair to "Springs Eternal", "Joni", and the tasty "Yonder Hills", which brings to mind legends such as Warren Haynes, Danny Gatton, Robben Ford, and Eric Johnson. Check out Hinds' spectacular slide guitar on this workout! Other highlights include the mournful "Little White Lies", the quirky "Boo's Folly" (featuring some great acrobatic jazz/blues solos from Hinds), and the classy, rootsy slow blues of "Blues for Ok Tarpley". Toss in a few acoustic based tunes and some smooth jazz, and you have a pretty well rounded, varied album from a gifted guitar player who is ready and willing to be appreciated by the masses. Fly South is highly recommended, so don't miss out.
