Labyrinth: Return to Live

Labyrinth, the prog/metal band from Italy held their first reunion show at Frontiers Metal Festival in Trezzo Sull'Adda on October 30, 2016 a gig which has given said record company a bonanza in terms of live albums. The renewed Labyrinth line-up featuring founding members Olaf Thorsen and Andrea Cantarelli on guitars, long time singer Roberto Tiranti and the new boys Nik Mazzucconi (on bass), Oleg Smirnoff (on keyboards) and John Macaluso (on drums) played the Return To Heaven Denied album in its entirety with a couple of other tunes tacked onto the end.

This is one of those albums methinks where you really need to be a bit of a fanboy of the band in question to really get the subtle (or not very subtle) changes in the live recording twenty years late and the original versions. I have never been the biggest fan of Labyrinth, I've always been more appreciative rather than fanatical and that's very much how I feel about Return to Live. The whole album sounds pristine and the bass is suitably bouncy as one gets in a live environment and I always find that agreeable on a live album. Vocalist Roberto Tiranti is on point on every song which must be quite a difficult feat and the pitch towards the end of "Moonlight" must have the canines covering their ears! I enjoyed my time with this album but don't see myself revisiting it often but fans of Labyrinth may well do so.
