Bad Ambition: Storm Signal

Progressive AOR worked for Saga, Asia and Triumph, but it doesn't always work for Bad Ambition, an Italian band with good intentions. Storm Signal, Bad Ambition's second album, sounds as dated as the band's name. Granted, this is catchy stuff, and I'll admit that most of the hooks remained with me after the CD stopped spinning. But there's a distinct "cheese factor" to the Europe-style keys and children's singing on "Destination Unknown," and "Out From Your Life" opens with an a cappella passage before heading toward early Toto territory complete with bouncy piano plinks and staccato vocals. The weakest link may be ex-Empty Tremor singer Matteo Babini's voice, which is a little too light to help Bad Ambition live up to its name and, well, ambition. That said, these guys play well together, and Alessio Mosconi's wild keyboards and Mirko Guerra's steady riffs drive tunes like the title track, "Sea of Emotions" and "No More Love." After several spins, I sorta like this. But I still feel like I shouldn't
