My first visit to San Francisco in the 1984 involved listening to Metallica for the first time. I'd like to have a cool and fascinating story about how the band opened up new doors of musical nirvana. But it didn't. I wasn't impressed at first. Sounded like Celtic Frost with a better singer. So, I passed on them and got the live The Warning videotape of Queensryche in Japan.

I found Zebra and that began a life long fascination with this original three-piece unit. From California I was able to travel to Japan and South Korea and this enabled me to pick up special discs of Iron Maiden and the Scorpions. Loudness, the legendary Japanese metal group, broke through the American market with their first English language album Thunder in the East.

I was thrilled to see and hear how the Asian community loved their metal music and fully supported many of my favorite bands. I had a great deal of fun with dozens of Japanese metal fans and I will always be grateful for their kindness. Back in California, Price blew up the video tv and radio with "Purple Rain" and I was moved by his instrumental skill and production knowledge. This was a musician who was more than a mere songwriter.

Rush released Grace Under Pressure and again I fell in love with this intelligent band from Canada that always managed to sound interesting and vital at the same time. I was happy to see Kiss make a comeback without makeup and their music was often played on my flights as I traveled around the world in the US Air Force. David Lee Roth was a disappointment and I wish he hadn't left Van Halen. 1984 was a fine album and a super year for my life.
