Oregon based Dark Black surprised the Heavy Metal world last year with their album Sellsword, and now they are back with a new EP Midnight Wraith, comprised of merely 5 songs. Just some new work from a band that could become bigger in the World of Heavy Metal if and and when there was more originality in the songs, but don't mistake my words here, they are all good structured and well played song. That is not the problem here, and not only with Dark Black but a lot of Heavy Metal bands suffer the same problem.
The range within which they are playing their songs, it is by now very classic. Bands like Iron Maiden Judas Priest and the like started this making form of music bigger, not much has changed since they made Heavy Metal big again in the 1980's. Yes it is already some 25 to 30 years ago the genre came to a boom with the giants, and they are also still around so there is definetly a market for this Heavy stuff. Massive riffs, vocals most often ended at the end of a line with a long note. Great soloing. You'll miss out on nothing.
The production sounds to me as if it is just not complete, also a bit 80's like too much reverb and compression. To make it more worthwhile it needs to have a "fatter" sound. More Arena- like sound, but it's just not wide enough, and I think the songs deserve a huge sound.
These guys know how to play it but the sound lets them down. Get it right boys, it would be a shame not to.
