Canada's Bison B.C., much like Mastodon, have taken the name of a large lumbering animal as their own, and focused their music into a powerful sound that lives up to its namesake. Dark Ages is their latest release, a heaping platter of stoner & sludge rock that owes as much to the hardcore scene as it does to old school metal and psychedelia.
Opening cut "Stressed Elephant" is a monster of a track, complete with thunderous guitar riffs, blazing drum work, and a mix of clean and shouted vocals. As punishing as this piece is, there's also plenty of melody to go along with everything. It sets the stage for what's to come, as other tunes, such as the almost thrashy doom of "Fear Cave", the prog/doom/post rock gem "Melody, This Is For You", and the psychedelic metal of the lengthy "Wendigo Pt. 3" all take the listener through many twists and turns, offering a lot more than many of the stoner acts on the scene today.
Heavy, yet with plenty of groove and a lot of though behind the riffs, Dark Ages signals the arrival of Bison B.C., and while it might not be an album that's going to set the world on fire right now, my guess is this is a band that we should all keep a close eye on in the months and years to come.
