Highlord are a power metal band that I discovered this year; I was quite surprised I haven't seen this band mentioned before after hearing their material. Highlord formed back in 1996 and released their debut Heir Of Power in 1998 so they aren't a new band, this Italian group has recorded six albums their most recent was The Death Of The Artists in 2009.
This review is of their fourth release, named after that rather nasty chick with the snakes from Greek mythology, 2004's Medusa's Coil. This is the CD that got me hooked on the band; they aren't presenting an utterly unique musical encounter, just well played European power metal with their very infectious songs and very pleasing clean vocals, that's what Highlord have to offer. The production on this CD certainly isn't polished to perfection, but I don't have a problem as I actually really like that edge that it gives to their songs. Medusa's Coil is far from your middle of the road release, the top songs on here like "Far From The Light Of God" are proof the band is capable of composing great songs with an ample share of guitars and keyboards. Medusa's Coil serves as a great introduction to yet another very welcome Italian metal band; I have since been obtaining their other five albums which I am also enjoying a great deal.
