Lord, Jon, with The Hoochie Coochie Men: Live At The Basement (DVD)

While playing some sets of original classical music at the famed Opera House in Australia, Jon Lord re-injured a thumb, thus making it impossible to continue playing classical music.Needing to fulfill certain obligations, Jon contacted his friend and Australia native Bob Daisley ( Rainbow, Ozzy Osbourne, Uriah Heep, Gary Moore). Bob had been playing with some local boys in a band called The Hoochie Coochie Men, performing some classic blues standards. A few quick rehearsals at Sydney's 'The Basement', a live TV appearance, and a return to 'The Basement' for a full set later, a DVD is born.

This DVD captures a magical set of Chicago Blues with a very strong line-up. Joining Jon and Bob are Tim Gaze (guitars, vocals), Rob Grosser (drums), Jim Conway (harmonica), and special guest Jimmy Barnes ( vocals on 3 tracks). Jon revvs up the old Hammond B-3 ( complete with a whirling Leslie speaker) on blues staples and old pscyh tunes like 'Green Onions '. Jon entertains the enthusiastic Aussie crowd in between tracks with charismatic humor.

Not much to say on this one as it doesn't fit into any of the categories usually covered by this site. Fans of Lord's Deep Purple days will not be well served, although there is a version of " When A Blind Man Cries" which is served up both during the concert and also in the bonus material as one of the tracks the band covered during their expedient rehearsals. If you happen to be a fan of Chicago Blues ( and I guess you'd have to be a blues fan to know the difference between the various blues sub-genres) then you should definitely check this out . The band really gets a groove on and the sound is fantastic , with 2.0 PCM stereo, 5.1 Dolby Digital, and even 5.1 DTS available to really make you feel like you're sitting among the crowd. The camera work is great also with smart mixing which always focuses on the right musician at the right time during the song. For blues fans only.
