Harasai: The I-Conception

Germany's Harasai have utilized none other than the legendary Dan Swano to mix & master their latest release, The I-Conception, and the results are a great sounding modern melodic death metal album. Problem is, Harasai haven't really come up with anything new on The I-Conception that we haven't already heard before. Melodic death metal has sadly become a barren wasteland the last few years with unique sounds few and far between, and though Harasai has put together a competent, listenable slab of metal here, it's not really anything to get overly excited about.

There's a mix of growls and clean vocals on tracks such as "A Constant Disbelief" that will remind you of Soilwork, and at their most venemous, like on "Silent Murder", "Hour of the Dead Eyes", and the semi-progressive title track, Harasai bring to mind classic era In Flames, At the Gates, and Dark Tranquility. Closing epic "This Endless Road" might be the one track here that hints at better things to come from this band, as this piece is a churning, massive amalgam of twisted riffs, atmospheric & progressive passages, intricate rhythms, tasty harmony lines, and commanding vocal growls. It's easily the best track on the album.

Harasai certainly have all the tools, and there are moments on The I-Conception that will lead you to believe that greatness might be in the future for this German horde. However, too much of The I-Conception is rooted in sounds and styles we've heard to death from countless bands over the last decade. That being said, if you are a big fan of melodic death metal, this will no doubt want to find a way into your genre collection.

Harasai: The I-Conception
Posted by Scott Ward, SoT Staff Writer on 2011-02-27 11:06:51
My Score:

German band Harasai brings a tried and true melodic death metal style to the masses and technically a very good disc but one you would call not very original. Many bands over the last few years have used the same formula concocted by Harasai on The I-Conception but in their favor Harasai does make this one more entertaining than most. While they never overtly copy any of their predecessors, you can easily pick out many bits that will have you pointing to other groups as source material.

Even on some of the best moments of the disc like the song "A Constant Disbelief" where the mixture of clean vocals and growling snarling style make me think of groups such as In Flames, Mutiny Within, even Dark Tranquility the comparisons are easy. Their style is such a conglomerate you can play that game with the whole disc.

This is not to say that there is nothing worthwhile on the album by a long shot. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and these guys do spend a lot of time paying homage to the trail blazers of the genre but they also show the talent and flashes that prove they could be more than just a flash in the pan. The instrumental piece "The Void Within" and the following song "Hour Of The Dead Eyes" are terrific as is the multifaceted "This Endless Road". These show the promise of good things to come and I certainly would love to hear more stuff like it.

This genre of music seems to have stagnated in recent times and even though these guys do it quite well there is little but brief moments that will make you think that this band will move it forward. It is a disc that I would not pull out of the player by any means but it is also one that I would not seek out very often either. They need to take a step away from the pack instead of just running with it.
