Lonely Kamel: Blues For The Dead

Hailing from Oslo Norway Lonely Kamel is a band hell bent on keeping the hard edged, classic rock and blues sound from the early 70's alive. Formed in 2006 after a couple of informal jam sessions the band released their debut effort a couple of years later, which garnered them some very positive reviews. With 2010 drawing to a close the boys have just issued their sophomore disc Blues For The Dead on Transubtans Records.

Blues For The Dead is built around deep, solid grooves, catchy hooks and melodies, and blazing guitars that are, as Nigel Tufnel says 'one louder than ten'. While their sound is firmly steeped in this terrific grimy, heavy blues and stoner vibe what's great is that they're clearly not afraid to shake things up a bit and venture out into more psychedelic sounding territory as well. The band which consists of Thomas Brenna (vocals and guitars), Lukas Paulsen (lead guitar), Espen Nesset (drums) and Stian Helle (bass) sound tight as hell on these ten, smoldering, analog produced nuggets. These songs clearly wouldn't sound out of place back in every classic rock fans favorite decade of music. Featuring a nice mix of up tempo anthems brimming with swagger such as "Green-Eyed Woman", "Lady Mushroom" and "A Million Miles From Home" or the more drawn out tracks like "Stick With Your Plan" and the appropriately named ten minute final cut "The Trip", everything comes together almost flawlessly here. My only complaint is that the lame ass cover art doesn't come anywhere close to doing these stellar, kick ass jams justice. They should have opted for a more powerful image or something to give the listener a better idea of what's in store for them once they hit that play button.

If you like heavy sounding blues based rock that places a major emphasis on crunchy, distorted, hook laden riffs and melodies then I highly recommend checking out Lonely Kamel's Blues For The Dead.
