Motörhead: The World Is Yours

Studio album number twenty from Motörhead finds Lemmy, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee keeping up the run of consistent brilliance that we have come to expect over the past decade. Balls out rock and roll with frazzled riffs, powerhouse drumming and Lemmy's unmistakable sneering growl prove that the trio can do no wrong. Of course no matter how impressive their heritage the band still needs to deliver killer new songs and here they do so with aplomb. "I Know How To Die", "Get Back In Line" and "Bye Bye Bitch Bye Bye" are complete with the clever lyrical tongue-in-cheek turns of phrase that could only have been written by a certain L. Kilmister. Lemmy always pointedly states that they play Rock and Roll and not Heavy Metal and nowhere is this better exemplified than on the full throttle "Rock n Roll Music" where Campbell shines. The dark and devilish "Brotherhood Of Man" and the raucous "Outlaw" are other highlights in an album that clocks in at just under forty minutes and yet seems to speed by in less than half that amount of time.

Even after all these years Motörhead are still showing the young pretenders how to do it. Either the last great album of 2010 or the first great album of 2011 The World Is Yours is simply essential listening.

Motörhead: The World Is Yours

My Score:

Do you remember what cool is? For those of you old enough it would have been the band Steppenwolf. This band was just down right cool. Even if they didn't play a note, John Kay and company were the epitome of heavy metal with a swagger that made you want to be just like them. Well, fast forward a few years and we have Lemmy. If there is one guy who is the quintessential rock star it is Mr. Kilmister. Others may lay claim to the title but when it comes down to it, there is no one who emits heavy metal attitude quite like Lemmy.

Motorhead has seen them come and have seen even more fall by the wayside in their 35 years reign as one of the most enduring and consistent metal bands in the world. When you mention the name Lemmy Kilmister what instantly comes to mind is rock and roll. He lives, breathes and is the poster boy (if you can be a boy at 65 years old) of heavy metal. Along with his bandmates Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee, Motorhead has once again shown us what the heart and spirit of heavy metal is with the release of The World Is Yours.

Filled with the wonderful wit of Kilmister The World Is Yours has the grit and rebellious raunchy attitude of the best punksters along with the view of a guy who has seen much in his years on the planet. This is not an album that a youngster could have written as it has an undertone lyrically that can only come with experience. Most of it is done tongue firmly planted in cheek and with an almost cynical attitude to people who do not or cannot think for themselves. I think that Lemmy has a very low threshold for non thinking conformist and he seems to be having one helluva good time making fun of those that fall in that category.

The first words you hear on the album are Lemmy growling "Go ahead and put the blame on me". Yes I will blame him for helping push me down that path my mother warned me about called rock and roll. This is not what he meant with those words but they are fitting. From the start of this disc when the face melting "Born To Lose" reminds you what heavy metal is all about to the end where you get another mega dose of rock and roll attitude with "Bye Bye Bitch Bye Bye", you are given ample opportunity to remember why these guys are one of the true bad ass bands on the planet. They just don't give a crap whether you like them or not. They do what they want, how they want and when they want. If you don't like it then too bad!

Lemmy has one serious moment on the album. Snarling and growling as his custom, Kilmister lets the current hypocrisy of our political systems and the attitude of our worldwide society have it with both barrels in the powerful "Brotherhood Of Man". One thing you can say for Lemmy, he doesn't beat around the bush!

Lemmy's straightforwardness comes across in song after song. All you have to do is listen to "Get Back In Line" and you will realize that he is just telling you things you already know but in a way that is not only balls to the wall rock and roll but also in such a direct manner there is little doubt about how he stands on any issue he chooses to tackle.

At one point Lemmy becomes the Reverend Kilmister and practices his own brand of religion with a hymnal to the thing he worships "Rock 'n' Roll Music". This one will take you back a few years as the guys almost forget their customary snarl and bring back the feel of when this devils music first hit your ears. Do I dare say it…they almost sound happy on this one!

One thing you can count on from Motorhead is you know what you are going to get with each release. Similar in that aspect to a band like AC/DC they bring you quality with each album. Maybe not much variety but then you wouldn't expect it either. All of the reasons that you look at buying a Motorhead album are on this disc as they bring it to you hard, fast and with an in your face attitude that IS rock and roll. Lemmy's status as a rock and roll legend is secure. The World Is Yours only exemplifies why.
