Lagrimas Mexicanas is a bit of a departure for legendary jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, as he's paired with Brazilian singer/guitarist/percussionist Vinicius Cantuaria for an album of smooth, swinging, Latin tinged sounds and addicting pop melodies. The CD features mostly songs that highlight the soothing vocals of Cantuaria with gentle undercurrents of layered electric & acoustic guitar plus percussion, but there are also a few very fine instrumentals as well.
"Cafezinho" and "La Curva" offer a dazzling display of guitar majesty from the two players, set within a Latin rhythmic framework, but even vocal numbers such as "El Camino", "Calle 7", and the endearing title track offer plenty of impressive fretwork, though understated. "Aquela Mulher" sees Cantuaria's alluring vocals drawing the listener in while the weaving guitar melodies tantalize your senses, and the duo deliver their most impressive instrumental display on the mysterious "Briga de Namorados".
You wouldn't think Frisell's snaky, experimental jazz style would mesh with the Brazilian flavors of Cantuaria, but it all works quite nicely. Guitar fans who enjoy a little Latin jazz in their music would be well advised to seek this one out.
