Equilibrium: Rekreatur
Rekreatur is Equilibriums third release, which is filled with melodic and muscular musical interactions, very much in the vein of Finntroll, Turisas and Rhapsody of Fire, with its enthusiastic and at times bombastic and somewhat engaging approach. This is a band that is leaving no stone unturned in their quest to present their music to the world. Call it Pagan Metal, call it Power Metal, call it Folk Metal, call it Viking Metal, call it Melodic Death Metal, hell dispense with the labels, just listen and have fun.
Germany has a knack of being able to produce rock bands that have a good ear for melody and a strong song writing structure; well Equilibrium are no exception to this rule. The band have mixed in heavy synth sounds layering it with the mandatory aggressive and powerful guitars, bass and drums, inserting growling vocals throughout which in all honesty adds depth, making it all sound testosterone driven. Hell this is what this music was created for. If the band had taken any other vocal approach then the album would have fallen on its knees praying for mercy to the Norse gods, which is a reverential hat tipping to the new vocalist Robert Dahn who with drummer Tuval Refaeli, (who I feel tired just listening to his breakneck drum patterns), joined the band in 2010, a daring move to some, an added bonus for me.
When you are presented with such strong song structures such as "Der Wassermann" that are impassioned with strength, style and beauty, you can't but help liking this band. "Aus Ferner Zeit" offers the listener even more confirmation that this is a band that means business, being two tracks that make the admission to these vibrant, epic cinematic soundtracks well worth the money alone, and that excludes the other seven stunning tracks on offer. Make no mistake that from the album opener "In Heiligen Hallen" to the albums epic twelve minute plus closer "Kurzes Epos" that this is just a rollercoaster ride. The excellence and smartness of what has been created here is that no two songs quiet sound the same a trap the band could have quite easily have fallen into.
