Florida's Malevolent Creation are one of the most consistent death metal bands around, and their latest release (on Nuclear Blast) Invidious Dominion is another in a long line of solid releases from the band. Nothing groundbreaking here, just good old fashioned, skull crushing Florida styled death metal.
At roughly 35 minutes, Invidious Dominion is quick and to the point. Led by the spectacular growls & screams of Brett Hoffman, Malevolent Creation tear through ten tracks of punishing music that offer plenty of crazed riffs and pounding rhythms. There are no songs here that scream 'classic', but tunes such as "Conflict Finalized", "Slaughterhouse", "Compulsive Face Breaker", and "Corrupter" are all solid, thrashing, neck breaking examples of quality death metal. Though the band does not perform in a style that's as technically proficient as some of their peers, the arrangements are tight and there's plenty of wild guitar solos splattered around the album.
From the great cover artwork to the grooves within, Invidious Dominion is a rather enjoyable death metal record. While it's up for debate as to whether Invidious Dominion will one day rate as highly as The Ten Commandments or Retribution in the Malevolent Creation back catalog, it's still a fine piece of work for this veteran band.
