Black Tusk: Taste the Sin

Not content to let fellow Georgians Kylesa and Baroness have all the spotlight, Black Tusk are out to make some waves with their latest release Taste the Sin. While Kylesa assault the listener with a non-stop barrage of influences and styles, Black Tusk make no bones about their love of Black Sabbath and hardcore. Plenty of sludge ridden, doomy riffs and screaming vocals and barks to be found on this one.

To be honest, that's part of the problem here. Much of Taste the Sin is fairly one dimensional, and while there's certainly no shortage of powerful tunes here, this is stuff we've heard before, and better. "Snake Charmer", "Red Eyes, Black Skies", "Twist the Knife", and "The Ride" all have capable, heavy riffs, but after a while many of these tunes sound interchangeable, as if they were retreads from some old Crowbar or Eyehategod album. The vocals are decent for this type of music, but lack any sort of variety and can get grating after a while. All in all, Taste the Sin is solid for what it is, a raw, unpolished, and heavy stoner/sludge metal affair. If you're ok with that, chances are you'll like what you get with this one.
