Dimaeon says that Exit Reality is a view of the band past, present and future. The 3 song EP does show a band in transition but I don't know if it is for the best. The first song on the EP is the look into the future that they promise. Sad to say it is the least interesting song on here. Pure melodic death metal that offers nothing more and nothing less than you can hear from a multitude of other bands. It is by far the harshest song on here and for the first four and a half minutes of the disc you will think that you are in for another brutal hammering of a most vicious kind. The promo material says that this is one track from an upcoming full length concept disc. I certainly hope that the remainder of that album has more to offer than what is shown here. Or at least I hope it shows, like the rest of Exit Reality what they can do.
With the next song "Terra" the band tackles a few different approaches in their epic 10 minute piece. From a very mellow, melodic start to the growling heavy vocal style of the first song, Dimaeon hits upon a winning formula with their progressive metal layered on a bed of death metal which is their foundation. Using both clean and aggressive vocals along with the shifting musical styles makes this a glimpse into what I would hope to be in their future. I really like what they are doing on this one and hope that this album is put out to see where the interest of the listener is. If so, I put my vote on the old version instead of the new.
The closer "Aeon" is a bit heavier then its predecessor but still shows a more diversified style which is really where this group shines. Heavy as hell to start it breaks into a very melodic passage with clean vocals and some tasty guitar work before bringing the hammer down like a sledge only to change up gears later on again. This is some very good progressive metal and well worth checking out. Then contact these guys and tell them to stay the course and all will be well.
This is a disc full of promise but scares me with the direction they say they are heading. I certainly hope that they continue to show the creativeness of the last two songs and not go down the already crowded path that they say the band is aiming for. I will eagerly look forward to the full length release and see which direction they go.
