Believe: World is Round

Believe is a band headed by former Collage and Satellite guitarist Mirek Gil. I reviewed their album This Bread is Mine back in 2009 and enjoyed it.

This album opens with cool vocals and synths that fly in and around the soundscape as the title track gets its introduction.

"No Time Inside" has a Satellite sound to me, which I miss so much. Really looking forward to Satellite's next album. The pounding drums, slow power bass and incredible synths begin their rhythmic climb. Violins and a small orchestrated sound supports the rhythm as it builds, before the grinding guitars take center stage. The violin and soft drums on this song are wonderful.

"The World is Round Part II" lays down the foundation for the concept of the album's music.

"Cut and Paste" has a rough edge to it and it is supported with a video for the song.

"New Hands" is another stand out song full of good lyrics, piano and soft drums. It would sound great as a new Satellite song.

"Poor King of Sun/Return", the epic off the album, opens with a very cool sitar sound. It will take you away on an almost ten minute journey.

The rest of the album is great and full of the power electric chords and synths you come to expect from Collage, Satellite and now Believe. Karol Wroblewski's vocals are great throughout the album. This is another great album to add to the Believe collection. No drop – off here.

Believe: World is Round
Posted by Michael Popke, SoT Staff Writer on 2011-02-04 13:59:01
My Score:

Arguably among the strongest of Polish prog bands, Believe returns with its fourth studio album, World Is Round — a demanding yet absorbing listen that explores, according to press materials, the "cycle that constitutes one's rhythm of life." It's not exactly "Circle of Life" stuff from The Lion King, but that's OK; Believe makes you think more than Elton John.

After a 34-second throwaway opening track, "World Is Round – Part I," the album properly opens with the majestic "No Time Inside" — a tour de force of melody and emotion about "the peace between my ghosts" and "the war between my gods." Vocalist Karol Wroblewski wrote lyrics for the first time on World Is Round, leaving listeners to wonder how much better 2009's This Bread Is Mine might have been had he penned lyrics for that album, too.

Wroblewski also wrote lyrics to "Cut Me Paste Me," the album's heaviest track with some appealing guitar work from Mirek Gil. "Lay Down Forever" haunts with its quiet, creepy beginning and spiritual lyrics, while "Poor King of Sun/Return" possesses a distinct Middle Eastern anxiety, thanks to moody sitar. By the end of the album's longest piece — punctuated by Satomi's glorious violin — Believe likely will have satisfied the skeptics.
