Binney, David: Graylen Epicenter
This is a great compilation of classic and smooth sounding jazz tracks which would fit perfectly in any jazz fans collection.
"All of Time" opens quickly with David's sax, rambling keys and cool drums. The rhythm slows as David takes center stage and builds the architecture for the song comfortably supported by excellent drums from all over the soundscape. The piano is also very good. The sax solos are fantastic, especially when he hits those very high notes. David also adds his vocals to the mix towards the end of the song.
"Graylen Epicenter", the title and epic 12:35 minute track is full of inspired jazz sax. Cymbals, drums, piano and that alto sax open this one with some cool added bass. Gretchen Parlato's vocal harmonies add perfect warmth to the mid section of the track. The percussion sounds that help close the song add flavor.
More cool sax and piano fill "Equality at Low Levels". This song has more of a bouncier beat.
"Everglow" opens with soft drums and equally soft piano, before David's sax joins the soundscape. Gretchen Parlato's vocal harmonies match the sax range well.
Slow bass and quiet keys, along with David's sax and Gretchen's vocal harmonies make "From this Far" stirring, yet relaxing. Once the sound opens up, Gretchen's 'do, do, dos' really add flavor along with the acoustic guitar which makes its entrance. This song is one of the best cuts on the album.
Cool quiet, soft drums open "Terrorists and Movie Stars". David's sax joins in to lift the rumba like rhythm and beat that really picks up later.
"Same Stare, Different Thought" is a very short sax solo mixed well with Gretchen's vocal improvisations.
"Home" is Gretchen's showcase. Her voice is beautiful and mixes well with David's soft sax, the slow piano and soft percussion.
Thumping drums blast open the start of "Any Years Costume". Excellent percussion mixed well with David's sax and Craig Taborn's piano. The best and most grooving song on the album.
"Waking to Waves" is a cool, Latin beat drifting by the ocean. Nina's vocal harmonization adds flavor to the mix. The trumpet solos are excellent.
