Kreisberg, Jonathan: Shadowless

Jonathan Kreisberg leads a band of "acoustic" jazz artists through this well defined jazz symphony of songs.

"Twenty One" opens fast and full of sound. Guitar, drums, cymbals, bass, and keys work together to set a smooth rhythm and melody which flows freely throughout the nearly eight minutes of this song. Will Vinson's sax adds great flavor as the song progresses and Henry Hey's piano paints with bright strokes.

Drums take center stage at the opening of "Stir the Stars". But Hey's piano soon chimes in with both high and low keys. Vinson's sax is added to the mix and together with the bass and drums help build a great rhythm. Kreisberg's guitar adds the necessary elements to lift the production even higher.

The title track, "Shadowless", begins with great piano mixed well with Kreisberg's guitar. The delicate rhythm that develops between the two instruments is wonderful.

The traditional Greek addition to the album, "Zembekiko", is an intricate and wonderful weaving of piano, guitar, keys, bass and soft drums with cymbals. Later the pace picks up as the sax is added and the drums really kick into gear. The piano dances well with the rhythm.

Slow, soft and tranquil guitar opens "Long, Like a Mercury Day", with the sax and drums blending in well to the building sound. The slow chill remains throughout, with the soft patted drums adding so much to the sound.

Heavier guitar adds to the change in sound we hear in "The Common Climb". The drums are back and the bass helps keep pace. The sax adds brilliance along with the tambourine which helps add to the beat. The song concludes with all instruments blazing full on, creating an interesting effect.

After all the dynamic power of the last song, the slow quiet piano on "Defying Gravity" actually seems to do just that. A nice soft sax solo adds to the calm, along with the soft wind sounds of the cymbals.

George Gershwin's "Nice Work If You Can Get It" starts with a cool electric guitar and soft patted drums. The bass, drums and guitar pick up the pace, but set a quiet cool relaxing mood.
