At Our Heels: Misanthropy and Godlessness

I was expecting At Our Heels to be much worse than they actually are. Well, what do you know! This band is a duo consisting of main/madman Alex Pulisci (words, music, vocals, guitars and bass) and drummer Ben Murray. On this album (EP or full length?), you will find thirteen tracks and a total running time of 26:26. Now that points out to a certain direction already isn't it? No, this is no black, death, thrash, doom, prog or power metal.

Misanthropy and Godlessness is not falling into any specific genre, although the vocals are definitely of the core/screamed type in its awfulness, unfortunately. The thing is that At Our Heels stands out from the crowd by actually being good musicians. The drumming is powerful, kicking and rolling. The guitar work of Alex presents some juicy riffs, harmonious arpeggios and leads as well as some interesting solos. During the moderate parts, the guitar is crunching some good doomed riffs; a path they should explore more. I found many tracks sounding the same, to the point of missing the simple fact that a new tune was playing. At least the good doom moments on "Rituals" and "Non Sun Qualis Eram", were presenting a pleasant break. In the middle of all this, is the best and most mature composition called "Graves", proving these guys can write, play and crush very well too.

Next time around, either do an instrumental album or learn to growl without screaming and keep the doom vibe alive.
