Tattered Soul is a German trio and they are offering their brand new, debut album. Originally founded by Mictian and Set in 2007 , later joined by drummer An Fauglier; who has since left the band. The group has various influences in the dark realm of metal, while also including bands like Alice in Chains. They describe their work as depressive black metal.
During the first part of this disc, I was wondering where the depressive edge was. In fact, what I was hearing was more like the generic and fast, furious and straight forward black metal. The simple compositions were repetitive and not much interesting as such. Then came track #4, "Terror Propaganda" with a crunchier and moderate tempo; a well-received change. For some reasons, the following compositions were more interesting and their depressive edge finally showed up. Along with it appeared moderate tempos and increasing harmonies in their song structure. Songs found on tracks #6 and 8 , "Tattered Soul" and "Fäulnis", are actually quite good compositions with calmer moments at times and include clean arpeggios. "Everyone Dies Alone" adds even cleaner guitar. I've noticed a better sound production too in that part of the album, whereas the first three songs had a much rawer style. That rawness is back on the closing track as well.
Overall, this is not a bad black metal disc at all, with a partly generic side but also coming with a decent depressive vibe.
