Not content to allow the German thrash spotlight to lean towards Kreator or Sodom, Destruction are back with their best album in decades. Day of Reckoning is a killer collection of neck snapping, bone crunching thrash metal, further proof that the old thrash guard (Megadeth, Exodus, Overkill, Testament, Heathen, Forbidden, and the already mentioned German acts) are continuing to have a renaissance that is blowing away the competition.
Schmier & crew are completely on top of their game throughout Day of Reckoning, delivering one brutal thrash anthem after another. Mike's guitar work is superb, as he dazzles with complex riffery and virtuoso leads on cuts like "The Price", "Hate is My Fuel", "Devil's Advocate", "Destroyer or Creator", and the crushing title track. I'm almost moved to say that Day of Reckoning brings back memories of Destruction's glory days of the late 80's, but in all honesty, I think what you'll hear on this latest CD is taking that classic sound to another level. The rhythms are more complex, the guitar work more brutal & ripping, and Schmier's vocals even more venemous. The production is also impressive-it's easily one of the bands best sounding albums ever.
There's not a dud in the bunch, just plenty of kick ass thrash played with plenty of intensity. Add Destruction to the list of veteran bands that are busy fueling a classic thrash revival.
