Hellbound was the 1985 sophomore release from Germany's Warlock, the band that turned out to be the launching pad of the successful career of lead singer Doro Pesch. Originally released on Vertigo Records, Hellbound is now being reissued by Metal Mind Productions, and it's housed in a digipack complete with an essay on the band and a booklet packed with lyrics.
Much of the material on Hellbound is raw and heavy power metal with plenty of dramatic 80's styled guitar work. Doro is at her screeching best on cuts such as "Earthshaker Rock", "Hellbound", "All Night", and the frenzied "Out of Control", but she also shows a more melodic side on "Wrathchild", "Down and Out", and the emotional "Catch My Heart". There's a reason why Doro's often been called the 'Queen of Metal', and you can hear her vocal skills in perfect form throughout this often overlooked gem in the Warlock catalog. Though the production and some of the arrangements sound a tad outdated today, there's still a rawness to many of these songs that is quite charming. The CD has two bonus cuts, the excellent "Hellraiser", and a live version of the title track. Both are worthy additions.
It's a shame that Metal Mind didn't remaster Hellbound like they have done with most of their other reissues, but regardless, it's good to have this one back in circulation once again.
