NeversiN: NeversiN
Coming out of Padova in Italy, NeversiN are a five piece melodic rock and metal act who have tried, and to some extent succeeded, in creating an album full of eclectic styles and vibes. The overall feel of the album is that of a slightly more melodic Iron Maiden (various eras), but there are also touches of Green Day power punk, NWOBHM, melodic rock and the chart friendly bubble gum rock of Busted. Now that may sound like a slightly confused mix and in truth it is, however as I said, this amalgam of styles from song to song does appear to be what NeversiN set out to do.
Singer Filippo "Ben" Benetton is a dead ringer for Robin McAuley (Grand Prix/McAuley Schenker Group), which means he has a powerful, melodic voice full of rich character and is actually the stand out element of an otherwise workmanlike album. That's not to say that the other four guys involved Matteo Scalcon (guitars and keyboards), Federico Fabian (guitars), Danielle Businari (bass) and Alberto Quarta (drums) aren't a proficient, tight foursome capable of firing out crunchy riffs, catchy melodies or rock solid beats, it is just that the album is all a little polite and predictable.
There's nothing wrong with the slightly sleazy rock of "Fairyland", the out and out Maiden of "October" or the Judas Priest like "Part Of The Crime", with all three being convincing slabs of metal that set the heart racing and the head banging. However there's just too much "fluff" mixed in between and the production is just too light weight. Songs like the over earnest acoustic ballads "Trust" and "The Game We Call Life", are so generic that they are almost Eurovision pop-nonsense fodder. Rather than change the pace or mood of the album, these songs merely blunt its attack and I'm not even going to go into the "humour" song "Naneborgs", with its random shouts and noises! Closing the album with Deep Purple's "Highway Star" brings things to a conclusion in fine style, with NeversiN actually giving this classic track a bit of a kick in the pants, but it does also show up the lack of song writing quality in some places of this album.
This is a decent album with a few good tracks although much could have been left on the cutting room floor. With the mixtures of approaches through this, the third NeversiN album not really working well together, it is a little difficult to see where they go from here.
