Jumalhämärä: Resignaatio

Originating from Finland and formed in 1996, Jumalhämärä counts on board four musicians that alternate their instruments. I suppose it is another way to say these Finns are multi-instrumentalists. With this comes the idea that what they wrote and played has to be interesting, and it sure is!

What this band plays in essence is black metal music with a certain Scandinavian twist. This is far from being a generic act. They use their guitars, drums, keyboards and vocals to create music partly rooted in the black metal arts. The elements of harsh vocals, distorted guitars, and tremolo-picking leads, blast beats and atmosphere are present. Their pace is generally moderate and includes some good old slow, bone-crushing moments as well. What makes Resignaatio stand out from the masses is the sound and atmosphere. Their vibe is not just darkly atmospheric, but it is also cacophonic, mysterious and a bit psychedelic on the side, while throwing in a touch of industrialism too. No, don't go about thinking this is a piece of weird crap, since those guys were able to inject enough harmonies in their songwriting to make this somewhat chaotic release quite listenable and melodious. I was surprised to hear some slide guitar on one of my favorite composition, "Storm is Coming". There are no bad tracks on this disc. Their best work is found on tracks two (already mentioned), "Haul" and "596", as well as on the closing piece of suffocating madness called "Of Enlightenment and Righteousness Pt II".

Don't be scared to grab this Finnish opus of adventurous black metal; it won't bite you!
