Brutal. That's the best way to describe the latest release from Emmure, titled Speaker of the Dead. 15 tracks of crushing deathcore, sure to get your blood boiling and body ready for that next trip to the mosh pit. Plenty of jacked up riffs, pounding drum work, and a pulverizing mix of hardcore bellows, screams, and the occasional melodic vocal. Amidst all this mayhem, there are some solid numbers here, but after a while it becomes harder and harder to distinguish what Emmure is doing as compared to the thousands of other acts on the scene who churn out the identical styled extreme music as they do.
Like crushing breakdowns? Check, got those here, and plenty of them. Can't get enough varied hardcore & metal vocal styles? Well, you have that too. With 15 songs, and most of them pretty short, the majority of Speaker of the Dead begins to blend together after repeated listens, and not a lot is overly memorable. That being said, these guys certainly know how to bludgeon the listener with power, as evidenced by the solid numbers "Area 64-66", "Solar Flare Homicide", and "Demons With Ryu", and "Last Words To Rose" features some textured guitar work that hints at other surprises this band might have up their sleeves on future releases. Overall, Speaker of the Dead is a solid, if for the most part unspectacular deathcore release that probably won't gain Emmure new fans but should keep their loyal following happy.
