haarp: the Filth

Phil Anselmo's Housecore Records has brought us one of the new players in the sludge/doom marketplace with the release of the Filth by New Orleans based haarp. Born on the bayou may explain the depth to which these guys sink into the quagmire of their chosen field. This is one of the heaviest and grimiest pieces to emerge from the swamplands of Louisiana as haarp crawls through this material at a snail's pace and drags the listener through this oozing wasteland with them. With most of the songs clocking in between six and eight minutes and the monotone vocal growl and screams of Shaun Emmons, this one is a slow painful torture that would find its best uses in someplace like Guantanamo Bay.

There is so little difference between the songs on this disc they are all just varying degrees of dirge like material that just seems to drag on an on and on. The band would have been much better served by cutting down the length and repetitiveness of each song. There is a market for this kind of stuff I am sure but I cannot get depressed enough to find this one in the least bit enjoyable. There is one very true statement that I found on the back of the disc. It says "Illegal downloading is Killing music, so is haarp"!
