I didn't want to touch this thing. Hell, I hoped nobody would even see me with — much less hear me listening to — a CD called Screw, Nut & Bolt by a band known as Snatch Magnet. Even The Onion considers that one of the 10 worst band names ever.
Fortunately, this seven-song, 36-minute debut isn't as bad as its title. Although it's not sleaze rock, these Hollywood-bred guys do seem to take themselves less seriously than their music suggests. In fact, there exists a depth of songwriting here that you probably won't expect. It's catchy and deliriously listenable, smart and, um, deliciously tight.
Arena-rock elements of Cheap Trick, Black Sabbath and dare I say Zebra can be heard, while "Call of the Maiden" emulates — who else? — Iron Maiden and is the album's heaviest song. And the opening of "Multi-Girl" sounds like U2, circa The Joshua Tree, before launching into a timeless melodic, sing-along song. Are these really the same guys who pose for promotional photos in a men's-room stall?
I can't believe I'm actually going to type these next words, but today's American rock scene needs more music by Snatch Magnet. It also needs this band to change its name.
