Tito Puente may be gone, but his legend lives on throughout Tito Puente Masterworks Live!, a stunning tribute to the Afro-Cuban jazz musician's career from Conductor/drummer Bobby Sanabria & The Manhattan School of Music Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra. Recorded live at the Manhattan School of Music in late 2008, this is an exciting CD of swinging, Big Band Jazz with a strong Latin flavor. Featuring a wide variety of musicians on saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, acoustic bass, vibes, drums, timpani, and percussion, the Orchestra cooks from start to finish, as the tone goes from Afro-Cuban swing jazz, to Latin funk, salsa, and mambo. Plenty of amazing solos abound here, like the majestic vibe excursion accompanied by salsa rhythms on "Autumn Leaves", the horn & reed fest "Cuban Nightmare", as well as the intoxicating, danceable numbers "Mambo Buddha" and "Alegre Cha-Cha-Cha". Jazz freaks will just love the abundance of melodic sax, trumpet, and trombone lines on "Picadillo" and "Mambo Beat", two upbeat tracks that just ooze that Latin feel.
Wonderful stuff here on Tito Puente Masterworks Live!, and you'll swear the late maestro himself was banging away on the percussion alongside the rest of the musicians involved. If you are in the mood for some upbeat, swinging Latin jazz, you'll need to hear this one folks.
