Brimstone Days; The: The Brimstone Days
"Here We Go The Brimstone Days!!" Well so hollers singer and guitarist Håkan Lanz in way of introduction to this debut album from the Swedish trio, and once the seventies fixated funky, rocking groovefest kicks in, you can understand his enthusiasm. Lanz is more than ably assisted by Johannes Malmqvist on drums and Hampus Hallgard on bass and together this day-glo group of grinning retro rockers lay down some of the slickest, thickest grooves you could hope to find anywhere. Every note on this self titled album sounds like it was lovingly created and carefully placed on the disc, before being inflated to bursting point with the good time, but perfectly focused fun and frolics of a band that really have hit the ground at full speed.
Lanz is a mighty fine singer, as he fires out a sound that creates a vibe perfect for quaffing beers on a hot summer's day, the booooming bass of Hallgard is guaranteed to get any party rocking, while the straight to the point drumming that Malmqvist locks everything into place with is perfect pin point precision, while still loose enough to let the grooves roam free. Picking out highlights is virtually impossible when every song is absolutely bursting with cool as you like attitude that just becomes more and more infectious every time you spin the disc; actually the band say it perfectly themselves on their press release when they proudly and quite rightly announce that The Brimstone Days "Take the groove from funk, the "hell yeah" from rock and the melodies from pop". Detractors, if there are any, could point out that there isn't anything on this album that hasn't already been done before, but who cares when the end results are so damn catchy and memorable?
I don't know what they're putting in the water in Sweden these days, but if you need proof that The Brimstone Days are the real deal as far as seventies retro rock goes then click on the link and watch some of the great clips on their MySpace for proof that these guys rock and with huge grins on their faces that lead to huge grins on your faces.
As the album proclaims at the end "And that was The Brimstone Days!" and may there be many more of them!
