Straight from the streets of L.A.'s Sunset Strip comes, wait a second, I mean straight from Germany comes Dust&Bones. Sounding like a mix of 80's Hair Metal, Stoner Rock like Monster Magnet and maybe a band like D'molls or Kix, German band Dust & Bones quickly rip through their latest release, 666 Neurotic Bombs (Firefield Records) like kids with free candy. Upbeat, Dirty Hard Rock is what these are about. 11 tracks flavored with Punk and Metal attitudes all wrapped up in a greasy, straight ahead, in your face, take it or leave Rock package.
I have to admit right upfront that I didn't like this record right off the bat, but their songs do have a bit of an infectious nature to them. They seem to seep into your head and make you begin to get into them. Songs like "Don't Wanna Know Why", "Dust&Bones", and "Pyramid Hats" start to sound better on the 3rd listen, when they first sounded kinda silly and stale. Dust & Bones simple approach and simple, stripped down songs are actually quite catchy, in an AC/DC or KISS kinda way. This is basic Hard Rock at its simplest.
Vocals are pretty good and the vocal harmonies are even better and the solid production lets the simplistic tunes be what they are. The good grooves, catchy hooks and solid rhythms that grab a hold of you, do wind up making you like Dust&Bones more than you thought was possible and that is an accomplishment all on its own. There is an awful lot of energy on 666 Neurotic Bombs, but there is also a bunch of cringe moments that balance this one out to a dull roar. This is an OK record, but better than I originally thought.
