SLP or Sebastien Lepine Project is a group of musicians from Canada gathered around Cellist Sebastien Lepine. In his normal musical life Sebastien plays with Orchestras the classical music of the great old composers. Classics if you will. He had always set his mind on playing modern Rock. This album now playing in my CD player is the first example of Sebastien's venture into the world or rock music, titled Perception .
The music is best described as progressive Metal with an edge. The edge being the Cello of Sebastien as well as all tracks on the album are instrumental. Helping him on his first solo outing are guitarist Martin Carbonneau, bassist Ian Peterson, and drummer Denis Marchand.
This first experiment with the modern rock, progressive style is one that may easily pass you by, Not that the music is boring or non inspiring, no it is of a high standard indeed, with solid compositions, lots of twists and turns, epic length songs, so what more can you ask for?
Well I'll be blunt if I may, the album is solid as I stated but can go relatively unnoticed as we have so many albums that sound similar these days. It would be a shame though to let it pass you by, specially if you like instrumental tunes. These guys are excellently skilled to play a great song.
I would recommend everyone to at least take your time and listen to the samples on the SLP myspace page. You should be ready and willing to hear the album after that.
Oh, before I forget be prepared for the longer type of song, as there are only 6 songs on the album but they do pass the hour quickly.
