A Life Divided: Passenger
As the music and words enter your ears the first thing that jumps up and points itself out to you are the influences that can hear throughout, which includes bands such as Stabbing Westward, Linkin Park without the rapping, A Perfect Circle, NIN, Filter, VAST Depeche Mode, Duran Duran and even The Pet Shop Boys. They are not straight influences though, as A Life Divided has managed to put their own twist and flavours into the presentations.
The catchy electro rock that is played here is quite catchy with its anthemic approach, which really allows the versatile vocals of Jürgen Plangger to really breathe, being the real standout feature, whilst the music at times can sound slightly cold and mechanical, something that does warm your insides the more you listen. The song writing ability here is of a high standard; minus the use of the ubiquitous growling vocals that are normally associated with this genre, making it all a very smart move for the band.
The cover of Alphaville's "Sounds Like a Melody" rocks much harder than the original, whilst "Hey You" moves around like a mix of Seether and HIM, "Save Me" develops the synth rock approach but looses some of its strength on its way. The weakest track here is "Other side", which is a shame really as all in all it is a very strong album. The band has real creative ability and is more than competent of building walls of sonics that are both powerful and will bludgeon the listener.
A Life Divided has covered all the bases here, trying to appeal to all, which they have succeeded in doing. This really is a band that has the potential to succeed; having a sound that does have a commercial edge, that is both appealing, enjoyable and at times rocks like a bastard.
