TDW: Scrapbook

TDW is the abbreviation for Dutch musician Tom de Wit. Tom runs his own record company, and Scrapbook is his follow up to Haunts. This is 120 minutes of epic metal/prog music on two CDs. If I wrote my normal track by track review you'd probably get too bogged down from CD one alone.

So suffice it to say, that there are more highlights on this one CD set than some band's entire catalog. It is a massive effort which includes the help of 13 additional artists, who Tom invited to help add to the flavor of the mix. Haunts was a 51 minute album in comparison, with Tom doing the majority of the playing and creating. This time Tom wanted more. And more was definitely produced. The guitar work and keys are simply amazing throughout Scrapbook. There are so many highlights this review was turning into a three pager.

What was missing was the cover art and lyrics. That would have helped get through the dense material on these two albums. This is a story of grand proportions which shares similarities in subject matter with Operation: Mind Crime, The Wall and many other classic epics. Whether it will ever receive that kind of celebrity remains to be seen.

If you have the time and want an original take on some themes which are popular amongst the prog and metal scene, sit back and enjoy this epic.
