Evangelivm: Nightside of Eden

Hammer of Hate is a label having releasing music from Finland only up until this album came to them. Evangelivm is from Russia and count only two members. I is handling music (guitars, bass and drums or drum machines) while II took care of words and vocals.

Evangelivm is all about black metal, the Satanic and darkly mystical path of this art. The booklet contains pictures and drawing of skulls, diabolical entity and some titles are in Latin. So people with a sensitive heart and/or religious issues might not want to get too close to this album. This is dark and intense music, but that does not means devoid of any melody or real songwriting. Although pretty much in your face as such, Nightside of Even has some subtle elements to offer too. These subtleties reside in the fact the compositions are more often pulsating a moderate metronome, and in the crafty used of distorted arpeggios. This is always a winning combination in black metal. Add to this a bone crushing rhythmic section of riffs and fat bass, and you have a good idea of what's under that esoteric cover art. I believe that drum machines might have been used, especially noticeable in the faster parts, although not really creating a problem as such. Opening and closer tracks are both instrumentals with good arpeggios and crushing-ness. "Corpus Dei" and "The Black Devotion" have both mid-crunchy goodness and the sick vocals to accompany them. For me, the following track, "Divine Flames", is the best piece of crunchiness offer on this release. It is mid-paced bone crushing, filled with distorted arpeggios and intensity; besides having an epic edge by lasting a solid nine minutes.

To sum up, Nightside of Edens won't revolutionize the black metal scene, but just add a nice piece of darkly crushing black metal.
