Continuing in its series of double-headers, Prophecy is releasing Andromeda Awaiting from Swiss act Nucleus Torn. A compilation was also out during the same period. Nucleus Torn is, in fact, the creation of multi-instrumentalist Fredy Schnyder, who plays some twenty acoustic and electric instruments. This ambitious project includes male and female vocals, flute, violin and the likes.
Andromeda Awaiting is the band's third release in their career, and like the previous work, ventures into different musical paths. The listener will be melodically transported through various genres such as: progressive, neo-classical, folk, rock and jazz. I would say though that in general, an eerie progressive feel is omnipresent on this album. The female voice is reminiscent to White Willow, and the ambient nature of the compositions is not without reminding me of early King Crimson, in their quieter parts of course. Lots of acoustic and organic tonalities are to be pleasantly witnessed by the listener on this disc. Off the six tracks, simply called by numbers (I, II, II etc…) the opener and closer are long epic compositions lasting over fifteen minutes. These don't actually feel that long, being varied and full of melodious guitars, violin, flute, piano, etc…in the frequent musical breaks. The closing track, #VI is also involving a sad mood and a heavier, guitar driven moment. We can hear some more traditional string instrument on #4, perhaps a bouzouki, but I am no expert, so I might be wrong. Still, this exotic instrument is adding a cool Oriental vibe to the opus. A few keyboards parts were used also, notably in the intro of track #VI.
Andromeda Waiting is a very relaxing and pleasant album to listen to. I personally preferred the female vocals, and they are mostly resorted to here. The musical breaks are numerous; always filled with melodious moments to wander in. Highly recommendable, this album won't disappointed the fans of more ambient prog/neo-classical music.
