Sacrilegious Impalement: Cultus Nex

The formation of Sacrilegious Impalement goes back to 2005. Founding member Impaler Von Bastard (guitars, bass and main song-writer) enlisted Kaosbringer (vocals and lyrics) and completed the line-up with Exordium's drummer, Asassin. The trio released a demo, EP, mini album, as well as appearing on a few compilations before this debut full-length.

This album was part of the promos received from Finland black metal label, Hammer of Hate. Although their releases didn't impress me, a couple were interesting. Such was the case with Cultus Nex. Not that it was outstanding or unbelievable, but it was tasty. Take the opening track, "Arrivals of the Forgotten Demons, for instance. This is a juicy, moderate track with crushing guitar work; a very good way to introduce your music. During the album, you will be entertained by variously paced and melodious dark black metal anthems. The vocals are either a deep raspy styles, a deep growls or some really wicked ones. The music is in your face, melodic and punchy; done in a very good sound production environment. Their melodiousness is coming from those tremolo picking, leads, even some clean ones if you please, as well as those dirty distorted arpeggios. Besides the opener, I found "Holy Terror" and "Baptism by Blood" pretty cool. After the "last" official song, "Utterly Rotten", comes a silence followed by an unnamed composition. Too bad, since this hidden track is very good too; following the mid-crushing madness filled with sick rasps and clean vs. buzzing guitars.

So, Cultus Nex is a good Finnish black metal disc, and a tasty debut effort from Sacrilegious Impalement.
