Worignition: Human Extinction

Almost two years since unleashing their debut EP, Embrace The Apocalypse, Montréal death metal outfit Worignition have been hard at work on their first full length effort Human Extinction, which as of this writing is on the verge of being released. The band has gone through a couple of lineup changes since then, with Damian Durion stepping in for departed vocalist Michel Lussier and bassist Vinns Rousseau taking over for James McCallum. Rounded out by the twin axe assault of Marc Favreau and Julien Rousseau, along with drummer Jonathan Drolet, I can assure you that Worignition successfully weathered the storm, because once again, they have delivered an absolutely punishing slab of brutal and complex sounding death metal.

Enlisting the production assistance of Cryptosy's Chris Donaldson was definitely a good move, because everything in the mix is crystal clear and the instruments sound crisper this time around, as Human Extinction brings together the four songs from the EP, along with five brand new tracks. They waste little time, going for the jugular right from the onset as the searing title track explodes forth with an onslaught of furious blast beats and a myriad of flawlessly executed, intricate riffs and solos, all of which are expertly interwoven around Durion's vicious, guttural growls and anguished screams. While the formula throughout Human Extinction may appear simple enough, Worignition is able to keep the listener fully engaged, not only through an abundance of chugging riffs and blazing solos, but more importantly, they clearly understand the value of killer sounding melodies and constantly shifting arrangements, what that can do for you, and how it can go a long way towards separating themselves from their fellow contemporaries in the often crowded, extreme metal genre.

Although Human Extinction clocks in at just under forty minutes and could have been a bit longer, the band has clearly put a lot of time and effort into it and the results speak for themselves. They have upped the ante and taken it to the next level. All that's left now for Worignition, is for them to snag that major label deal. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out.
