"Ketil Bjørnstad returns to the piano/cello duo, instrumentation which defined two of his best-loved albums, The River and Epigraphs with David Darling, back in 1996 and 1998. This new collaboration with Svante Henryson, however, tells a different story. In brief, he is an artistic polymath, rather like composer/improviser/author Bjørnstad himself. The music they create together - atmospheric, dark-hued, of melancholic temperament - is similarly beyond category"
That quote from the ECM press release pretty much says it all. This is a beautiful, but melancholic at times, classical album of wonderful piano and cello instrumental music. Perfect for reading or relaxing. All of the songs are full of emotion and power. For the ever prolific Bjornstad (who has released numerous solo albums as well as appeared on countless other artists' releases) this is indeed another winner of stark Scandinavian jazz.
