Pseudosix: Days of Delay

Days of Delay features 14 tracks of psychotic pop that ask you to imagine what might have happened had Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett not knocked himself into the black hole of LSD quite so fast, what might have happened if King Crimson had gone with a gentler strain of progressive rock, what might have happened had Kurt Cobain taken the time to go to graduate school to study the poetry of the Romantics and the finely-tuned stanzas of T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. Or something.

The songs here are rock-solid. "Run Rebel" provides a nice dose of the Dead reimagining American Beauty, while "Love and Logic" imagines the Violent Femmes on motion sickness pills and "Chasing You Down" feels like a long-lost contribution to a long-lost screen gem from the '60s.

But the real masterpiece here, though, is "Bound To Unfold," a gentle, pleasant track reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel with a dose of aggression but with lyrics that touch on much darker areas of life. The protagonist lives in the valley of indecision, spitting out venom at those who look very much like him ("I don't like your jokes and I don't like your apathy.") It's a new anthem for college kids, a soon-to-be-classic still undiscovered by the mainstream, as important a song for this musical generation as "Creep" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" were for the last.
