Pedro Giraudo Jazz Orchestra: Cordoba

Pedro Giraudo moved to New York City in 1996. He now lives a modern life in one of the world's largest metropolis. However, he is originally from Cordoba, Argentina, and his liner notes are fantastic on this album, telling of the album's inspirations. The music was inspired by Pedro's memories of life with his family in a large farm out in the countryside. "I was exposed to the most basic, fundamental things in life: conception, birth, sickness and death. I learned how to make bread, churn butter, ride a horse, start a fire, and fix all sorts of things". There was no electricity or many of the modern conveniences that we take for granted, like telephones. So the album is a great contrast between Pedro's life today and where he got his start.

Today, Pedro is a bassist, composer and arranger, performing in a wide variety of musical projects. One of them is his own award winning Pedro Giraudo Jazz Orchestra. This album is their latest project and it captures some of the spirit from Pedro's childhood memories of that farm life back in Cordoba.

This album is a wonderful mix of contrasts from the beautiful horn and woodwind sections to the bass and piano. The percussion from the Cajon and drums helps to keep the beat well throughout the album. This sounds like another wonderful potential award winner for Pedro. The highlights for me were "Vistas", "Pueblo", especially the early morning sound of Parte 1, "Duende del Mate", and "A La Escuela", with its piano.
