Well, the two former Deep Purple members have decided to do another album together, and we are very lucky that they did. These days, you very rarely see two lead vocalists do an album together, and in this case lightning has struck twice for Glenn Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner, as this sophomore release for the duo has surpassed the debut. This is quality, melodic hard rock, featuring powerful vocal performances from both singers, and tight musicanship from guitarist JJ Marsh, drummer Shame Gaalass, and keyboard player Ed Roth.
You can't get much better than the kicked up "Revelation", a Deep Purple inspired number with fat guitar riffs and raging organ, plus wailing lead vocals from Hughes and strong backup and harmony passages from Turner. "Losing My Head" is a heavy, churning rocker that recalls vintage Led Zeppelin, with huge Middle Eastern riffs from Marsh and emotional vocal trade-offs from the two singers. This one's as catchy as hell, plus features a killer guitar solo from none other than Steve Vai, whose tone, phrasing, and technique is evident from the first note he plays. Heavy funk is all the rage on "Going My Way" (where Turner really struts his stuff much like on Yngwie Malmsteen's Odyssey) and the rampaging "Let's Talk About it Later", complete with Hughes' powerful screams and Marsh's energetic guitar riffs. For the melodic rock crowd, there is the complex riff rock-meets-catchy hooks of "Hold On", and the epic sounds of "Burning the Sky", which also highlights the slippery bass work of Hughes and the atmospheric keyboards of Roth. Both tunes have a chorus that you will be remembering long after you take the CD out of your player.
They say the best albums are the ones that you wind up playing over and over, and the ones where the melodies stick in your head for weeks on end. This is one of those CD's, a great hard rock statement from two legendary singers who have cast aside egos and put their talents together to create some memorable hard rock that showcases both of their writing, singing, and musical talents. I'm already waiting for a third release, and is a tour of the US too much to ask for?
