Wow! Pretty cool and creepy cover art isn't it? This American band is an un-typical band hailing from Detroit. Being signed to the home of mass producer of sub-par releases, Hells Headbangers, Stoned is to be considered as a "lemon" in their catalogue.
Stoned has got to be one of the best, if not the best, album I've heard from that label, so it came as a real nice and unexpected surprise. No, this is not a black metal disc, but more related to good old and vintage Black Sabbath/Deep Purple. Don't go around thinking Acid Witch is just a copycat though. Indeed, these guys are not only good musicians knowing how to write tasty doom metal, but they also throw in their own personal musical twist. All moving at mid tempo, the compositions offer a nice variation to the listener. The crushing riffs are omnipresent, off course, and the vocals are of the deep harsh nature. The melodious elements of arpeggios, leads/solos, organ and keyboards all contribute in carving a somber ambience throughout the doomed journey. Acid Witch also resort to speech samplings here and there. The satanic themes are often heard during those moments; as they are also well present in the song titles. Looks like the fans of good doom metal have another band to look for with these American hordes. The compositions to point out here are quite numerous, but to name a few, my favorites are: "Witchfynder Finder", "Thundering Hooves", "Sabbath of the Undead" and the mighty crusher "Trick or Treat".
Stoned is a highly recommendable piece of American twisted doom metal.
