Baywolf: Baywolf

Homemade CDs … you gotta love 'em. Baywolf's self-titled three-track EP arrived on a CDR (albeit a fancy CDR) with do-it-yourself packaging that doesn't quite fit snugly into a jewel case yet nevertheless overflows with the kind of eclecticism that makes it easy to understand why this San Francisco-based male-female duo — according to Baywolf's web site — failed in its search for "the perfect compliment (sic) to this incredibly diverse new sound." So they decided to make a go of it on their own.

Thus, Baywolf consists solely of guitarist, bassist and keyboard player Beowulf Crow (I kid you not) and soulful-yet-certainly-not-soothing singer, drummer and keyboard player Ravyn Shadow (again, why would I make these names up?). This 12-and-a-half-minute EP features three rhythm-heavy songs that showcase the depth and breadth of Baywolf's eclecticism. "Deep Blue Sea" is the most accessible, following (more or less) traditional song structures and featuring Shadow's most-appealing voice. Meanwhile, "911" ruminates on the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, with patriotic yet still odd lyrics (Sample line: "As we whispered or shouted words of encouragement, we became one gender"), and "Acts With Bad Consequences" is most memorable for Shadow's repetition of the line, "I just want my fucking apple pie."

Another EP of bizarre stuff is available via Baywolf's web site.
