Daniels, Neil: Dont Stop Believin' - The Untold Story of Journey (Book)
Acclaimed rock journalist Neil Daniels (Judas Priest, Bon Jovi, Robert Plant) turns his attention to Journey for what has to be considered the definitive account of the ups and down of their lengthy career. With their return to the mainstream thanks in no small part to Glee this release is well timed but clearly is no simple cut and paste job and the author has evidently done his homework in trying to present an accurate account of their history.
Daniels' task is made all the more difficult by the fact that the band are so guarded in interviews and it has often proven impossible for journalists to really get a straight answer in regard to some of the more controversial incidents such as Steve Perry's departure, the Steve Augeri miming scandal and the hiring (and subsequent firing) of Jeff Scott Soto. Former manager Herbie Herbert is nevertheless a willing participant and gives a good insight into the behind-the-scenes workings of the band during their commercial heyday, albeit his involvement ended in the mid-90's. But despite these limitations the author cleverly avoids presenting his own version of events and sticks to the facts as can best be determined from the resources available and the bands voices are heard via their many interviews with the media.
A very entertaining and well researched biography, Don't Stop Believin' is as close as you will get to the story of Journey until such time as Messrs Perry, Schon and Cain decide to offer a first-hand account.

Daniels, Neil: Dont Stop Believin' - The Untold Story of Journey (Book) Posted by Pete Pardo, SoT Staff Writer on 2011-07-19 10:24:05 My Score:
Dont Stop Believin' - The Untold Story of Journey is a highly enjoyable and informative book detailing the history of one of the biggest rock bands of all time. Daniels does a great job giving a chronological look at each era of the band, and it's supplemented by plenty of interview snippets by those surrounding the group. Former longtime manager Herbie Herbert gives perhaps some of the more emotional and direct feedback, and it's clear he's no fan of legendary vocalist Steve Perry, as he discusses the singer with some obviously still bad feelings after all these years. For those who have followed the career of this band from the outset, this will be an entertaining read and give plenty of insight to all the line-up changes, musical evolutions, and behind the scenes politics that went on over the years. Above all, it's pretty current, as the book ends just as the band were set to go into the studio to record their now brand new album Eclipse. Much that went on in private, such as the sacking of Steve Smith, Robert Fleischmann, Ross Vallory, Ansley Dunbar, and Jeff Scott Soto, may be shocking to some who don't pay attention to the abrubt manner that some major bands change personnel, but it will certainly give you some insight into how 'cold' the rock music world can be.
An essential read for serious rock and roll fans.
