Slovenia's Bleeding Fist has a mission: to spread sickness and fear, and 'Ferox' – the latin for 'fierce' – could no better describe this quintuplet of horrible hymns to Beelzebub. Twenty six minutes of savage biting and relentless despair, this is black metal in all its ignominious glory. Their cover version of 'Black and Violet' by Italian horror rockers Death SS is a fittingly ferocious tribute to one of the originators of the first wave. Bleeding Fist unapologetically remains within the confines of the genre and spew as much rancour, venom, and poison into every profane scream, thunderous beat, and disproportionately distorted guitar line. For black metal to be good, it has to be great. But there are moments here, such as the title track and 'Force the Dead to Confess', where Bleeding Fist embodies the all-consuming anti-religious ire that fires black metal. And it's these that show a side to the band that the other two tracks neglect.
