What do you get when you combine Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi, Deep Purple's Ian Gillan, Iron Maiden's Nicko McBrain, ex-Deep Purple keyboard player Jon Lord, ex-Metallica/Voivod bassist Jason Newsted, and HIM guitarist Linde Lindstrom? Who cares you say? Well, that's exactly what this little 'project' is calling themselves. These musicians are showing that 'they care' about what is going on in Armenia, and proceeds of this 2 song single are going towards helping to raise money for a music school that was devastated during the recent earthquake there. The main song here, "Out of My Mind", is an exciting 'Sabbath-meets-Purple' rocker, filled with Iommi's doomy riffs, Lord's raging Hammond organ, and Gillan's unmistakable vocals. Instantly memorable, this song will remind those who loved Sabbath's Born Again album just how well Iommi & Gillan sound together. Adding Lord's Hammond, and the tight rhythm section of McBrain & Newsted to this makes the whole package all the more sweeter. "Holy Water" was written by Gillan and his old guitar mate from the Ian Gillan solo band, Steve Morris, and features Ian and Tony along with a completely new cast of players, mostly unknown, and it's less bombastic and heavy, but still a solid song.
In the end, this will leave you wanting more, but let's all be good humans for a day and plunk down a couple of bucks for this single, as it's going to a great cause. Then, we can hope that Ian and Tony decide to do something more with this line-up in the future.
